JORDAN - Petra

JORDAN - Petra

Petra is located 240 kilometres south of the capital Amman.

Petra is one of the ancient Wonders of the World and UNESCO World heritage site. Petra has been chosen by the BBC as one of "the 40 places you have to see before you die", so without doubt that Petra is the most famous attraction in Jordan.

During the 6th–4th centuries BC, Petra was created by Nabateans, a nomadic tribe from the northwestern part of Arabia who moved into southern Jordan. Petra was discovered by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812 after being lost by the 16th century for almost 300 years! It was described as "a rose-red city half as old as time".

At the end of the Siq, with its dramatic view of Al Khazneh ("The Treasury") :

The famous Al Khazneh ("The Treasury"):

Al Khazneh ("The Treasury") is very beautiful.. A massive façade, 30m wide and 43m high, carved out of the dusky pink, rock-face and dwarfing everything around it. It was carved in the early 1st century as the tomb of an important Nabataean king and later may have served as a temple. Al Khazneh ("The Treasury") is the most beautiful monument in Jordan and of an architectural style unique in the ancient world.

Al Khazneh ("The Treasury") has appeared in many Hollywood movies such as:Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade & Transformers : Revenge of the Fallen.
